Age UK Enterprises Limited is a commercial arm of Age UK and donates its net profits to that charity.

Who are Dignity?

For over 25 years, Age UK Enterprises Limited has worked with Dignity, a leading funeral services provider. Dignity has a long history of serving local communities across the generations. They support our values of care, transparency and professionalism.

Dignity and the Age UK Funeral Plan are regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority, the professional body which protects the interests of consumers in the funeral planning sector.

Does it take long to arrange and purchase an Age UK Funeral Plan?

Setting up an Age UK Funeral Plan is quick and easy. You can purchase a plan online, over the phone or by application form. If you want to talk face to face, to go through the plans and get help with the application form, you can visit a local Age UK office, but please call ahead before you arrange a visit as this service is not available at all offices. Once you have taken out a plan you’ll receive your Planholder’s Pack in the post within 14 days.

Are there any acceptance restrictions or plan limitations?

Acceptance to the Age UK Funeral Plan is guaranteed whatever your state of health and there are no age limits, as long as you are aged 50 or over.

The plans do not include:
Embalming.
The cost of special requests such as memorials, flowers, catering, newspaper obituaries etc.
Transport of more than 50 miles from the Nominated Funeral Director. Any charge for any additional miles will be payable to the Nominated Funeral Director at the time.
The cost of removal of mechanisms such as pacemakers (which must be removed before a cremation).
Costs for conducting the funeral, burial or cremation on a weekend, at an unusual hour or public holiday.
Any additional charges passed to us due to changes in regulations, tax, laws or generally accepted practice.The cost of repatriation outside mainland Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Isle of Wight or the Isle of Man (Basic Plan not available on the Isle of Man).
Any Doctor’s fees and Coroner’s fees.

Other plan limitations include:
If the plan is paid for by instalments and the funeral is required before the final payment has been paid, your Funeral Organiser would have to pay the outstanding balance at the time of the funeral.
Any taxes. Value Added Tax is not currently charged on a funeral service. However, if this or any other tax becomes chargeable on a funeral service or part of it your Personal Representative must pay the tax at the time of the funeral.

Basic Plan limitations:
There is a restricted choice from approx 800 funeral directors.
A restricted choice of date and time for the funeral will be available. Typically this means that with the Basic Funeral Plan the service will take place before 10.30am or after 3.30pm Tuesday - Thursday.
You may not make any financial contribution payments towards the costs of any Special Requests.
Not available on the Isle of Man.

How can I arrange my funeral the way I want it?

There is a choice of four prepaid funeral plans, offering a range of different services so that you can choose how you want your funeral to be. Any special requests, such as a favourite hymn or reading can be added as part of your application. If you request flowers or other elements that may incur a cost you can pay a contribution towards an Ivy, Holly or Rowan Plan at the time of purchase or your Funeral Organiser would have to pay for those services at the time of the funeral. You can't make any financial contribution payments towards the cost of any special requests for the Basic Plan. You can find out more here.

Can I choose my funeral director?

Dignity will allocate a funeral director to your plan. For the Ivy, Holly & Rowan Plans there are over 1,300 Nominated Funeral Directors and for the Basic Plan there are approximately 800 Nominated Funeral Directors across the UK. You may choose a funeral director from the relevant list. However, you cannot choose a funeral director that is not part of the list. If you would like your plan allocated to a specific funeral director please contact us before you purchase. We may allocate your plan to a different Nominated Funeral Director if required.

What if there are two of us?

If you’d like to take out a plan for two people there are two options:

You can either take out two individual plans which will give both of you the benefits of fixing funeral costs included in both plans at today’s prices. Or if you can’t afford this right now, Joint Plans are also available.

A Joint Plan attaches both your names to a single plan. A Joint Plan can be taken out for any two people. It doesn’t have to be your spouse or partner; you can take out a Joint Plan with any family member or friend.

A Joint Plan will hold both of your individual requests, but will only be used towards the cost of one funeral. When the first Planholder passes away, the remaining Planholder can make the decision to set the Plan in action or retain the Plan for their own use.

Many people take out a Joint Plan because they wish to plan for the future but they may not have the funds for two plans at the time. Taking out a Joint Plan provides the peace of mind for the future that the cost of at least one funeral will be covered.

Joint Plans are particularly useful for couples in instances where the remaining individual may not have the funds to cover the costs of their partner’s funeral. For instance, they may not be able to release any of their assets, such as selling the family home, to cover the cost of the funeral. A Joint Plan can be used to provide that security.

There is an additional administration fee of £75 for taking out a Joint Plan, but if you decide at a later date to take out a second plan, creating two individual plans, the £75 will be taken off the cost of the new plan.

Can I take out a Funeral Plan for someone else?

Yes‚ as long as they are aged 50 or over. There are no upper age limits. We won’t send the Planholder’s Pack to the named individual; instead all communications will be with the person who purchased the plan. You can find out more here.

What if I change my mind after taking out the plan?

You can request all of your money back within 28 days of purchase. You will receive a full refund of the money you have paid in. After 28 days have passed, you may still cancel your plan at any time for a £95 cancellation fee and the rest of your payments will be returned to you.

Who looks after the money I pay into the plan?

The money you pay towards your Funeral Plan is held in the Trust for Age UK Funeral Plans. This is an independent Trust Fund where the money required for the funeral will be held safe and secure until it is needed.

Do I have the option of cremation or burial?

You have a choice of either cremation or burial. With both options the cost of the Funeral Director’s services outlined in your plan will be covered.

If you decide to opt for a cremation an Age UK Funeral Plan guarantees to cover the cremation and minister’s fees, as set out in your plan.

If burial is your preferred choice, your plan will include a contribution towards burial costs. An Age UK Funeral Plan will provide £1,200 towards burial costs, and this contribution is guaranteed to rise each year in line with RPI inflation.

How will my Funeral Director know what to do when times comes?

It takes just one telephone call from your Executor or nominated funeral organiser to set your Age UK Funeral Plan into action. Everything they need to know can be found in the Funeral Organiser Pack provided when you take out the plan and we will support them at every step.

What happens if funeral costs go up dramatically?

The Age UK Funeral Plan guarantees to cover the full cost of the funeral director’s services, Minister’s fees and the cremation fee, as set out in your plan. This applies regardless of how far in the future your plan is needed and how much costs may have risen. Once you have taken out an Age UK Funeral Plan these costs are frozen at today’s prices and guaranteed never to increase for you and your loved ones.

If you have chosen a burial, the contribution of £1,200 will increase each year in line with RPI inflation. This contribution can be used for any element of a burial, including a plot.

What happens if there are outstanding instalments left to pay at time of death?

There is no need to worry. Your funeral can still be provided in accordance with your plan, even if you pass away before the payments are complete. Your Funeral Organiser would simply need to agree to meet any outstanding balance on the plan in order for the funeral to go ahead. If your Funeral Organiser decides not to use your plan they can choose to cancel the arrangement. For more information please refer to the cancellation information above.

Who do I call if I have a query about an existing plan?

If you have a query about an existing plan or you need to activate a plan after someone has died, you can call the Customer Service Team on 0800 02 23 243 and they will be happy to help you, whatever your query may be.

What happens if I move house?

Your plan will remain in place even if you move home. A new local Nominated Funeral Director will be appointed if appropriate. If you wish to remain with the same Nominated Funeral Director, you can do so, but there will be a fee for extra mileage over 50 miles.
